THE SMASHING OF RELIGIOUS GROUPS
Religions, by their very nature, call for the idealism of people, and in this way can become an encumbrance to the Communist Party in its conquest of the West. For this reason, every possible means must be used to cut down the activity of the church, and to lower its effectiveness. The psychopolitician should recognize that the more lies he can present to the public as facts, the more likely he is to succeed in reducing church influence.
It is the duty of the psychopolitician to prevent priests and ministers from delving into the minds of their parishioners, and to discredit those who attempt to do so. It is important that the individual be made to believe that "religion" is synonymous with "insanity". The psychopolitician must ensure that people believe religion has no bearing upon mental healing or upon good citizenship. They must be taught that the only possible solution to insanity lies in the realm of crude physical medicine.
Psychopolitical workers should maintain that spiritual beliefs are of no material use, and should promote the idea that all attempts at spiritual healing are fraudulent. Support for those in the clergy who can be discredited by their own conduct should be widely publicized and expanded wherever possible. Those who practice spiritual healing should be classified as insane or criminal, and arrested or silenced by any level of government.
Propaganda should be directed to convince the public that religious leaders are unsound and unreliable. They should be denounced whenever possible as hypocrites, charlatans, or as men who attempt to enslave the common people through superstition. Catholic priests should be discredited with their people. All religious beliefs should be taught as only a matter of myth and legend, and never as any recognized source of guidance.
The psychopolitical operative should devote approximately a fifth of his time to this matter, and should seek to make the nation itself—Congress, the Supreme Court, and other agencies—stand in the light of opponents to all religious influence upon the mass of people. National organizations should be recruited to the strategic end that "religion" is insane and that this insanity should be eliminated by the requisite government agencies. The agency should be installed fully to fulfil this purpose.
In accordance with the Communist Party goals, this smashing of religious influence should be carried out as an organized campaign, bringing newspapers, schools, and other groups, as possible, into the cooperation of the psychopolitical agent. When the nation is convinced that religious exercise is insane, and belongs in the insane asylum, that nation is one step from surrender to the Communist movement.
